Flag obligations

It is the responsibility of the Flag to implement LRIT in accordance with the regulations of SOLAS V/19-1:
  • Establish a National Data Centre or join a Regional or Cooperative Data Centre
  • Appoint a Recognised Application Service Provider (ASP) to manage the communications between the ship, the Communication Service Provider (CSP) and the LRIT Data Centre
  • Appoint Testing ASP/s to be responsible for testing onboard equipment on vessels regulated by the Flag
  • Instruct ASP/s to issue LRIT Conformance Test Reports or arrange for these documents to be issued by the Administration
  • Send a Communication of Information to the IMO
  • Issue a Marine Notice to ship operators
  • Provide the polygon coordinates for internal, territorial and 1000 nm coastal waters

The LRIT Data Centre is the repository of the Flag’s LRIT information (i.e. ship positional data) and is connected to the wider International LRIT system via the International Data Exchange (IDE) using a specific LRIT communications protocol.
