It is incumbent on each Flag to establish a National LRIT Data Centre (or join a Regional or Cooperative Data Centre) and formally appoint an Application Service Provider (ASP) to manage the associated communications between the ship, the Communication Service Provider (CSP), and the DC. The DC is the repository of all of the Flag’s LRIT information i.e. ship positional data, and is connected to the wider International LRIT system via the International Data Exchange (IDE) using a specific LRIT communications protocol. In some cases the appointed ASP may also be the nominated Administrator of the DC i.e. Ii the situation that the complete LRIT service is outsourced.

Pole Star offers a comprehensive end-to-end LRIT service that consists of the most cost-effective, low-risk and expandable DC solution available. It demonstrates and emphasises the importance of Pole Star’s managerial and technical expertise, server environment, integrated software applications, and essential support service infrastructure. In summary, by appointing Pole Star as its DC Administrator the Flag will be teaming with a professional and committed ASP dedicated to the provision of LRIT services. It will be obtaining a fully outsourced LRIT solution to meet its IMO obligations, a DC for testing by mid-2008, a system providing far wider operational benefits, and a system future-proofed for application to MARPOL.

The System’s advanced features will enhance the Flag’s internal quality procedures and by extension its Voluntary IMO Member-State Audit Scheme performance, provide financial efficiencies in its day-to-day operations, and significantly improve the external perception of it as a quality, responsible and progressive Flag.

Pole Star will carry out the following tasks;

- Ship terminal commissioning and operational management
- Provision of ship equipment, activation services, and global installation.
- Satellite communications service
- Application service
- International LRIT System integration (IDE and DDP)
- Multi-lingual 24/7 support
- Data Centre billing service.
